Joanna first came to work at IFSA-Butler in 1990 as assistant director for administration. Now the senior vice president, she oversees the Indianapolis office’s daily operations and policies, including staff management, the transcript process, crisis management, liability concerns, student welfare and conduct, and safety issues. Joanna also serves as the main liaison for the IFSA-Butler overseas directors. Before coming to IFSA-Butler, Joanna was assistant director for educational programs at the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and was a program coordinator at the Center for Education Abroad at Arcadia University (formerly Beaver College).

Joanna has been heavily involved in numerous educational and study abroad organizations, including NAFSA and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO). She is also a member of URMIA (University Risk Management Association). Her NAFSA and AACRAO involvement includes numerous workshops, presentations, a position as the Region VI SECUSSA representative, work as the Region VI publications and newsletter editor, chair of the Region VI 1995 Conference local arrangements committee, and chair of AACRAO’s 1996-97 study abroad committee. She also was NAFSA’s Indiana state representative from 1996 to 1998 and a contributor to three NAFSA publications: Abroad by Design (ed. Maryelise Lamet, 2000), Strategies for Maximizing Education Abroad Resources, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, and a chapter on on-site responses to mental health crises in Best Practices in Addressing Mental Health Issues Affecting Education Abroad Participants (ed. Barbara Lindeman, 2006). Joanna is a member of the interassociational task force on health and safety and NAFSA's Health and Safety Subcommittee. In November, 2005 Joanna was honored by Region VI with the George E. Hertrich Advocacy Award, which cited her as “a true visionary in the field.”

Joanna studied abroad for a year at the University of East Anglia and graduated from Emory University with a degree in history. In the summer of 2000, Joanna received certification in management development from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.
