Protests in Cairo-September 13, 2012

Thursday, September 13, 2012

IFSA-Butler continues to monitor protests occurring in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in Cairo. Media outlets are reporting that protesters gathered at the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday and were pushed back at least 100 yards by security forces. Protests have continued throughout the day today, and there are reports of additional calls for peaceful protests throughout Egypt for Friday.

IFSA-Butler students are currently in Alexandria, where they will remain for the academic semester. Our on-site staff in Egypt have confirmed that Alexandria remains calm, with no evidence of protest activity at this time. Students are aware of the events in Cairo and in other countries and have been instructed to stay away from locations where protests, large gatherings and demonstrations of any kind may occur.

IFSA-Butler has no students studying in Cairo this semester.

Protests at U.S. Embassy in Cairo

On Tuesday, September 11, 2012, thousands of Egyptians protested outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo in response to the release of an anti-Muslim film made by an American. It is reported that the protest in Cairo remained relatively peaceful, despite a few protesters who managed to scale the Embassy wall, destroy a flag, and hang a pro-Islam flag in its place. The protest lasted late into the night; however it remained peaceful throughout its duration.

IFSA-Butler program students were not in Cairo at the time as they had already traveled to Alexandria, Egypt where they will be for the semester. The IFSA-Butler Director of Student Services, who is in Egypt with the current group of students, reported that everyone is doing fine. Indianapolis staff, along with IFSA-Butler staff in both Alexandria and Cairo, will continue to monitor this situation and provide any updates as necessary.

Costa Rica Earthquake

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit the Pacific coast of Costa Rica on Wednesday morning. The earthquake was centered along the coast in northwestern Costa Rica, about 90 miles from IFSA-Butler's program location in Heredia.

The earthquake has sparked a tsunami watch for Costa Rica and surrounding countries, but Heredia is centrally located in Costa Rica, so the threat of a tsunami affecting the region is minimal. The warning was cancelled later in the day.

There have been no reports of serious injuries or significant property damages in Heredia. Our resident director in Costa Rica, Teresita Camacho, has contacted all students to verify that they are safe and to reinforce aftershock safety measures.

Our staff in Costa Rica will continue to update our U.S. office on this situation.

IFSA-Butler Monitoring Fighting in Areas of Belfast

Violence between opposing political groups has flared up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but IFSA-Butler staff in Northern Ireland do not believe that the fighting will affect fall semester students.

Our Northern Ireland students will begin their programs in two weeks. The violence began over the weekend and is occurring on the edge of Belfast, far from where IFSA-Butler students will be attending orientation and taking classes. Moreover, our staff in Northen Ireland believe that this outbreak of voilence will be over by the time the IFSA-Butler students are due to arrive in Belfast.

We will continue to keep students, parents and advisors updated on this situation as needed.
