Severe Flooding in Santiago

February 27, 2017

Heavy rains and severe flooding in Santiago, Chile, have resulted in landslides and a disruption in the municipal water supply. Our Santiago resident director, Isabel Yevenes, has been in contact with IFSA-Butler students and their host families to verify their safety and to emphasize precautions with regard to the flooding and obtaining safe drinking water.

Santiago authorities cut the city's water supply on Saturday over concerns about contamination. IFSA-Butler requires host families to maintain emergency kits, including bottled water, in their homes as a precaution for situations such as this. In addition, there are numerous points of bottled water distribution around Santiago.

IFSA-Butler Santiago students arrived in Chile for orientation last week, and classes are scheduled  to begin at our affiliated Santiago universities this week and next week. Chilean authorities are urging schools and universities to delay the start of the semester, so IFSA-Butler will continue to proceed with orientation and update students on any class schedule changes.

Wildfires in Christchurch

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

Wildfires have broken out in Christchurch, New Zealand, causing extensive property damage and requiring evacuation of some citizens. A state of civil emergency has been declared due to the rapid spread of the wildfires, but IFSA-Butler students are not in any danger at this time due to their location within the city. Our resident office has contacted every student to verify their well-being and to provide safety information. Students are continuing to participate in pre-semester campus activities and IFSA-Butler events as scheduled.

December 20, 2016

IFSA-Butler is working to contact all students currently studying on our programs in the U.K. and Ireland to ensure that they were not in Berlin during yesterday's truck attack at a Christmas market. The majority of programs have already finished for the semester, and the few remaining students are taking exams and turning in final coursework this week. We will provide any updates as we have them.

Earthquake in New Zealand

Sunday, November 13, 2016

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has occurred in New Zealand, approximately 59 miles north of Christchurch on the South Island. There have been no reports of major damage or injuries, but the earthquake was felt throughout much of the country. There have been several aftershocks during the past few hours. New Zealand officials issued a tsunami alert, and the first tsunami hit the northeastern coast of the South Island (about 120 miles north of Christchurch) two hours after the earthquake.

IFSA-Butler's University of Canterbury program officially ended on Friday, November 11, and most students have already returned to the U.S. We will be contacting and verifying the safety of any students who chose to remain in Christchurch.

Earthquakes and tremors are a common occurrance in New Zealand due to its geographical location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire." IFSA-Butler's orientations in New Zealand always include extensive earthquake preparedness and response instructions. Additionally, our resident staff are available to students 24/7 in the case of emergency.
