|Severe Flooding in Lima|
March 17, 2017
Northern Lima, Peru is currently experiencing severe floods. Heavy rains for the past few days have caused flooding and mudslides along the Peruvian coast. Areas in the north of Lima as well as along the waterfront have been affected, although IFSA student program housing, the majority of which is in the Miraflores neighborhood south of the city, has not been affected. Our resident director in Lima, Laura Balbuena, has advised students and host families of this and prepared them accordingly. We will closely monitor the flooding in Peru and adjust any future programming events if necessary.
We spend considerable time talking about safety and security with students during the mandatory program orientation as well as throughout the semester. At this time, the IFSA-Butler program in Lima will continue as planned. All homestay locations are in areas unaffected by the floods, and homestay families have emergency kits on hand should the situation escalate.
