Hurricane Irma Update

September 11, 2017

Havana has experienced extensive flooding in low-lying areas and the loss of electricity, which is expected to return later this week, as a result of Hurricane Irma. All IFSA-Butler host families remain safe and reported no damage or flooding to their homes, however they are clearing debris left as a result of the hurricane. In order to them the time and space to do so and to ensure that IFSA-Butler students would not be without electricity (and thus a shortage of food or water), students on our Cuba program will not leave Mérida to return to Havana until September 14 or 15. The additional time in Mérida will allow for any flood waters to recede and for power to return.

The Universidad de La Habana is closed and classes are tentatively scheduled to begin next week. Once IFSA-Butler students return to Cuba, our staff will work with the university to get them back on track with their academic courses.
