Study Abroad May Lead to Higher GPA, Graduation Rates

A University of Georgia study has found that study abroad may lead to higher GPAs and better graduation rates. The study also found that international education boosts the academic performance of at-risk students.

The university began the study in 2000 and continues to track the performance of students who study abroad. Click here to visit the university's research website.

Summer Fees Now Available

Program fees for our summer 2013 programs are now available. To see any program's fees, visit the page on our website and click on the Dates & Fees tab, or you can see a comprehensive list of all summer fees here.

Our program fees always include tuition, housing, student support from start to finish, comprehensive medical insurance, transcripts, orientation and excursions abroad, and more. In addition, many of our summer programs include at least one meal per day.

March 1 Deadline for First Generation Scholars Program

IFSA-Butler reminds students and advisors that the application deadline for the fall 2013 First Generation Scholars Program is Friday, March 1.

This achievement-based program offers first generation college students significant financial, academic and pre-professional assistance for enrollment in an IFSA-Butler semester or year program.

The scholarship is worth up to $2,500 and covers $500 in housing and meals, flight costs (approximately $,1500 value), student visa fees where applicable, and passport fees. Recipients also participate in a blogging program and a resume building workshop, and they receive specialized first generation college student information.

The scholarship requires a minimum GPA of 2.7. The scholarship is not based on financial need, but applicants do need to complete a Financial Footprint. Applicants must submit a CV or resume and a 500-word essay related to the first generation college student experience.

New Sumner Programs in Latin America

IFSA-Butler is offering two new Latin America programs this summer. The application deadline for both programs is April 1:

Community Building and Sustainable Development in Peru
Participants in this program will divide their time between Lima, Moyobamba and Piura and study the culture and diversity of these three distinct regions in Peru. A key component of the program is work with the NGO Ciudad Saludable on a sustainable development project.

Courses: Advanced Spanish and Peruvian Culture (3 credits); Biodiversity and Sustainable Development (3 credits); Community Development Seminar (2 credits) All coursework is in Spanish.

Housing: Host families in Lima (one student per family); housing in hotels in Moyobamba and Piura. The program fee includes two meals per day.

Eligibility: 4 semesters Spanish, 3.0 GPA

Medical Spanish and Public Health in the Yucatán
This program focuses on learning medical terminology in Spanish and exploring issues of public health in Mexico. It incorporates visits to urban and rural medical facilities, as well as excursions to Mayan ruins and cenotes.

Courses: 3 credits each - Introduction to Medical Spanish (Beginning 1 or 2, or Intermediate 1) and Contemporary Issues in Public Health in the Yucatán (taught in English)

Housing: Housing is with host families (one student per family), and the program fee includes three meals per day.

Eligibility: 0-2 semesters Spanish; 3.0 GPA
