IFSA-Butler Selects 2014 Mike Owens Scholarship Recipient

IFSA-Butler congratulates Butler University senior Kelsey O'Shaughnessy, who was selected as the second Mike Owens NAFSA Scholarship recipient. Kelsey is a psychology major who participated in our University of Sydney program during the spring semester 2013.

The scholarship provides one outstanding IFSA-Butler alum each year with the opportunity to attend the annual NAFSA conference, the largest networking and professional development event in the field of international education. The scholarship was created in memory of IFSA-Butler Program Advisor Mike Owens, who died in April 2012.

Congratulations Kelsey!

Scotland Alum Publishes Book

Lauren Magaziner, a Hamilton College graduate and former IFSA-Butler student at the University of Edinburgh, has written a children's fantasy book, The Only Thing Worse Than Witches. It will be published by Dial Books, a division of Penguin, and has received outstanding reviews so far.

IFSA-Butler Returns to Cuba

The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) is happy to announce that we are accepting applications for fall 2014 at the Universidad de La Habana in Cuba.

IFSA-Butler was the first integrated study abroad provider in Cuba, and one of very few providers ever integrated at the University of Havana (UH). UH and IFSA-Butler have collaborated on this resumed semester program, in which IFSA-Butler will facilitate direct enrollment in UH classes. The University of Havana is an outstanding, comprehensive university, and this program allows IFSA-Butler participants an opportunity to study alongside Cuban students in a wide variety of disciplines. Students also will take a course on Cuban culture and patrimony designed specifically for IFSA-Butler, and a Spanish course.

Additionally, IFSA-Butler provides full support to maximize students' academic and intercultural success, including orientation, academic advising and ongoing tutoring, academic excursions, housing with two meals a day, and more.

We are pleased that Dr. José (Pepe) Ballón, who served as IFSA-Butler's Havana resident director from 1999 to 2004, has resumed leadership of our program. Dr. Ballón, emeritus professor at Ohio Wesleyan University, has published a number of books on Cuban literature and culture, with extensive scholarship about José Martí.

In 2004, due to U.S. federal regulations, our program was suspended. With changes to the federal regulations, we can now reopen our program.

The application deadline for fall 2014 is April 1. More details will be available soon.
