Michelle Obama Encourages Study Abroad

First Lady Michelle Obama, while touring China, encouraged college students of all backgrounds to study abroad. "Our future depends on connections like these among young people like you across the globe," she told students at Peking University. She later answered more than 300 CNN iReporters' questions about study abroad, international travel and living overseas.

President Obama has already launched the 100,000 Strong Foundation, which aims to have 100,000 U.S. students study in China.

Exploring Community & Culture

IFSA-Butler's Exploring Community & Culture program (C&C) is designed to take students' study abroad experience to another level. It encourages students to get the most out of their time away, by blending intercultural learning with an exploration of today's complex notions.

Though IFSA-Butler's study abroad programs are already integrated, research has shown that students are more likely to grow interculturally with the assistance of a formal, facilitated program.

C&C is offered at no additional cost in the following programs:

IFSA-Butler in Egypt

IFSA-Butler has been monitoring political developments in Egypt and based on recent protests, some of which have been located at our partner university campuses in Cairo, we have decided to postpone enrollments in our Cairo-based programs for the foreseeable future.

Together with our Egypt resident director, Dr. Mohamed El-Komi, we are continuing to review events in Alexandria and speaking with our colleagues at the TAFL center, Alexandria University. While we will not operate our summer 2014 program in Alexandria, we will make a final decision about the fall semester program in Alexandria by late March.

Other IFSA-Butler Arabic Language Programs
Students still have opportunities to study Arabic language and Middle East culture through the following IFSA-Butler programs:

  • Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Rothberg International School): Students can choose a Hebrew track or intensive Arabic language track
  • American University in Sharjah (United Arab Emirates): Arabic language and a variety of other subjects are available less than 20 miles from Dubai
  • SOAS, University of London (London, England): This renowned university specializes in Asian, African and Middle East studies and offers semester, year and summer options

Thank you for your continued support and interest in IFSA-Butler programs in the Middle East.
