Egypt Progam Update PDF Print E-mail

Update July 12, 2011
We are pleased to announce that our Arabic Language program at Alexandria University will be running for fall 2011. We can accept applications for this program until August 8, 2011.

While we do not expect that our students will experience any serious disruptions this fall in Alexandria, we have a comprehensive crisis plan with several contingencies. These range from alternate courses that have already been approved for credit by Butler University to evacuation to the American University of Sharjah, where students would be able to continue their study of Egyptian Arabic.

IFSA-Butler is continuing to accept Egypt applications for fall 2011 and spring 2012. However, the country has been in a state of turmoil since late January, when anti-government demonstrations spread throughout the country. We are assessing the political situation on a regular basis to ensure that our future students will have a safe, productive experience there.

In the meantime, we are also working to secure additional locations in the Arab world in the event that we must cancel our Egypt programs for the fall. We also will continue to update our audiences on the status of our Egypt programs, as well as alternate options, as much as possible.

Update March 15, 2011
We are optimistic about the chances for our students to attend Alexandria University, so we are continuing to consider this program open for fall 2011. Unfortunately, due to continued protests in Cairo, we have concluded that our affiliated Cairo universities will not be stable choices for study abroad until at least 2012.

We have notified all fall 2011 Egypt applicants of our decision to keep Cairo closed for the fall. Cairo students are being given the option of attending our program in Alexandria, and both Alexandria and Cairo applicants may also consider our alternate program in the Middle East.
