From IFSA-Butler President Mark Scheid:

We regret to inform our students, colleagues and university partners that IFSA-Butler Program Advisor Michael Owens unexpectedly passed away on Saturday, April 7. Mike joined our team in January 2011 and has been a valued member of the IFSA-Butler family.

Mike graduated from Wabash College, where he majored in rhetoric and minored in Spanish and art. During his junior year Mike had the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in Granada, Spain. While abroad he traveled frequently, visiting Portugal, France and Italy. Mike often mentioned his time abroad and recalled fond memories of immersing himself in the language and culture of Spain.

Mike began his professional career in higher education at his alma mater, Wabash College, as an admissions counselor. It was during this time at Wabash that he realized his calling: Working with students, combined with his past study abroad experiences, created his passion for international higher education.

Mike thoroughly enjoyed helping students through the application process and was gifted in matching students' personalities and goals with the best overseas opportunities available. Students would often write to Mike extending their gratitude for his personable assistance before departure, or to tell him about their exciting times while overseas.

Mike was an absolute pleasure to work with and always made himself available to help others. His unique sense of humor was always on display and was best exemplified when he would entertain his fellow program advisors by quietly singing Prince's "Purple Rain" while working at his desk.

He will be greatly missed both at IFSA-Butler and in the education abroad community. We extend our deepest condolences to his parents and two sisters, as well as to all his friends, colleagues and students.
