Akaroa

Time May 16th, 2016 in 2016 Spring, College Study Abroad, New Zealand | No Comments by

This weekend I went to Akaroa with a group of my friends. The drive was around 5hrs long, so it was far but it was a really pretty town. We were going to stay in little cabins that have a glass roof so you can stargaze but we got there too late to check in. Instead we went to a hostel which was really nice. It was right next to the water and we woke up early the next day to watch the sunrise. It wasn’t the best sunrise but the clouds were still pink and and the sun was just hitting the peaks of the mountain range. It was a beautiful sight. Then we went on a 2hr boat cruise around the bay and the pacific ocean. There was a 99% guarantee that we would see dolphins so we were really excited about it. Just as they said, we saw dolphins as well as rare penguins and seals! The dolphins were swimming right next to the boat. They were Hector’s dolphins which are the smallest dolphins in the world and are distinguished by their rounded dorsal fins. The penguins were also one of the smallest breed. The town was colonized by the French so a lot of the roads and stores had french names. It was a good place to go for a short trip.

Mount Cook

Time May 2nd, 2016 in 2016 Spring, College Study Abroad, New Zealand | No Comments by

This weekend everyone in the complex went to Mount Cook. We all booked Mueller Hut to stay in overnight. We basically booked the entire hut apart from 5 random people. We left Friday at around 2pm, it was a 4hr drive. I was in a car with all guys and we played some fun games to pass the time. The first night we just camped out on some campground, I’m not sure. We had a bonfire and when we got there, we realized we forgot to pack the tent…so we all had to figure out places to sleep. Whoops! I found a spot in a car so it wasn’t too bad of a sleep. this week

Time April 25th, 2016 in 2016 Spring, College Study Abroad, New Zealand | No Comments by

This week my friend who is studying abroad in Sydney, Australia came to visit. It was so much fun to have her around and drive her to all the places I visited when I first got here. She arrived on Thursday night and left early Monday morning, so it was a short trip but she still got to see a little glimpse of New Zealand’s beauty. I drove her to St. Claire’s beach where we got brunch at a cafe called Starfish. Then we drove to Tunnel Beach, which is my favorite and she loved it. The rock formations are incredible to look at. It was a little busier than when I first visited but it was still great to see again. Read More »

this weekend trip to Doubtful Sound, Fiorlands.

DOPE. my abroad program organized a trip for all of us to go to Doubtful Sound and stay overnight on a ferry and it was amazing. We woke up early on saturday for a 6am bus ride which took us to a boat which then took us to another bus and then finally our overnight ferry. The first day was raining so that kinda sucked, the views were still awesome but no where nearly as amazing as they were the second day. Read More »

mid semester break

Time April 4th, 2016 in 2015 Spring, College Study Abroad, New Zealand | No Comments by

For our mid semester break we get a week off and my friend and I decided to travel to Fiji. It was SO much fun, I 100% recommend it. The weather in the spring is pretty hot and humid but there are so many cool activities to do. We visited a couple islands, did zip lining, swam with sharks, snorkeled and went sky diving! We got pretty burnt though lol, but on Mana island they had a spa and they offered a sunburn treatment so we did that a couple times. It was so great, the lady just put ice cold towels over our burns and put lotion on us. It was so worth the 30FJD. Everyone is super friendly in Fiji as well, kids are running around and just come up to you and ask what your name is. Then you both spend like 5 minutes trying to pronounce each others names. I could never pronounce their names the right way. They were so cute though. Read More »

trips

Time March 11th, 2016 in 2016 Spring, College Study Abroad, New Zealand | No Comments by

I’ve done a good amount of traveling so far, which I’m happy about. All of my flat mates have cars so it makes my life easier. We have gone to Tunnel Beach, St.Kilda’s beach, Sandfly beach, Long beach and St.Claire’s beach. All of them are so pretty. Tunnel beach is less beach and more rocks and it’s amazing. The rest are all similar except Long beach has caves which we camped out in last night. It was a bit cold but still a lot of fun. We all sat around a fire and cooked food. We also drove down to Lake Wanaka last weekend and did Roys Peak hike which was pretty difficult. It was an incline for 3hrs but the views were beautiful. The walk down hurt my knees a lot but still worth it. We then stopped at a restaurant and had some food because we were all tired and hungry from the walk. We also went to a rugby game, Highlanders vs Hurricanes. We cheering for the Highlanders and painted our faces. It was a lot of fun. Some of my friends are going to Fiorlands this weekend but I have a day trip with my IFSA Butler program on sunday. We are going on a bike trail which should be good.

I’m here!

Time February 25th, 2016 in 2016 Spring, College Study Abroad, New Zealand | No Comments by

I’ve been here for over a week now and its been so much fun! It’s beautiful here for a start and then I love my flatmates. First, I had orientation in Auckland for a few days where I spent a lot of time with the IFSA Butler group doing activities such as kayaking, sailing and scavenger hunts. It was a lot of fun. They also took us to places to learn more about the Maori culture which was fascinating. Now I’m in Dunedin and I’ve just been spending the majority of my days hanging with the people in my complex. Our complex is filled with other international students from the US, and some from the UK and then the kiwi hosts. Lots of different accents and everyone is really cool. A lot of people from the Boston area, one is from Arizona, then a few from England, one from Chile and one from Sweden. There are other places but I don’t remember them all. Read More »

the beginning

Time February 9th, 2016 in 2016 Spring, College Study Abroad, New Zealand | No Comments by

My program starts on the 13th!! That’s in 4 days. I have been in Thailand for the past week traveling around with a group called ThaIntro and have had an absolutely amazing time. But I am so excited to continue my travels to New Zealand. I had to pack REALLY light since I went to Thailand first. But to be honest I’m not that worried about it because i’ve managed to live with the little clothes I brought to Thailand. A lot of it is dirty but nothing really smells, and it’s normal to wear things over and over. At least in New Zealand i’ll have laundry. I have been in contact with my kiwi host and she seems really cool. I’m rooming with another girl and 2 boys in a flat. The one guy is also from the US and the other is from the UK. One of them reached out to me since he is also in Thailand. I’m looking forward to meeting them. Also looking forward to clean clothes and my own kitchen.
