Study Abroad Orientation & Excursions in Chile

Santiago Programs

Previous excursions included, but were not limited to:


Arrival and orientation

  • Airport pick-up for group flight travelers (when a group flight is available)
  • 10-day on-site orientation: includes transportation, accommodation, activities and most meals
  • Welcome meal
  • Introduction to Chilean culture
  • Discussion of academic differences and expectations
  • IFSA-Butler staff lead sessions on academics, living with a host family, integrating into the host university and more
  • Transportation to host family

Day trips

  • Isla Negra and Pomaire
  • Valparaíso and Viña del Mar
  • Tour of Old Santiago
  • Human rights tour

Excursions

  • Three-day trip to La Serena, a northern coastal city: includes a visit to an astronomical observatory and the beach, boating in Coquimbo and a tour of the Valle del Elqui, a neighboring port city (semester 1)
  • Four-day trip to Golfo de Arauco, historical Mapuche territory: includes a visit to a Mapuche community, a tour of the undersea carbon mines and a boat trip on a sacred lake (semester 2)

Other activities

  • Cultural activities: theaters, museums, concerts, etc.
  • Language exchange partners with Chilean students
  • Sports and cultural activities through local universities
  • Farewell dinner

Chilean Universities Program, Valparaíso

Previous excursions included, but were not limited to:

  • Intensive Spanish training
  • Transportation to host family

  • Curacaví, Pomaire and Isla Negra
  • Historical tour of Santiago

Excursions

  • Four-day trip to La Serena
  • Additional event at student's expense: Optional five-day trip to Easter Island. Includes transportation, some meals, lodging and sightsseeing tours. Cost: US$1,100 (subject to change). The trip will be offered only in conjunction with the Rapa Nui course and if there is enough interest in the trip.
