Study Abroad Orientation & Excursions in Costa Rica

 Previous excursions included, but were not limited to:

Arrival and orientation

  • Airport pick up for group flight travelers
  • Program orientation
    • Includes: Transportation, informational sessions, accommodations, activities and most meals
    • One week of orientation is held in Heredia. Activities may include informational meetings at UNA, intensive Spanish classes, course preregistration, tour of Heredia, San José and UNA.
    • Part of orientation is held in Monteverde Cloud Forest. Activities may includesightseeing, intensive Spanish classes, visit to the world-famous Monteverde cloud forest, tour of an organic coffee plantation and cultural hands-on events.
  • Orientation activities in Heredia and San José may include a tour of the National Theatre and visits to the National Museum
  • Introduction to Costa Rican culture
  • Discussion of academic differences and expectations
  • IFSA-Butler staff walk students through everything from how to succeed academically to living with a host family to integrating socially in the host university

Cultural events

  • Tour of Teatro Nacional
  • Visit Museo Nacional or gold museum
  • Workshop for painting Sarchí Oxcarts

Excursions
The following excursions may vary according to weather and availability:

  • Academic excursion to Peninsula de Osa for whale and dolphin watching
  • Chocolate tour (cacao plantation) in the Tirimbina Reserve, Sarapiquí community
  • Academic excursion to Cerro Bella Vista: Quetzals and high altitude birds watching
  • Save the Turtles expedition to either the Pacific or Caribbean coast
