Choose a university
Once you decide to go on an IFSA-Butler program, you'll need to choose a university. This site includes helpful information about each university, or you can request a program catalog. Some factors that may affect your decision are the dates of the program, the cost of the program and the courses available at each university. You can link to all of this information from each university's page on this site.

If you need help narrowing down your choices, call IFSA-Butler at 800-858-0229 and ask to speak with a program advisor. An advisor can help you decide which university program is the best academic and social fit for you, and he or she also can help you decide which courses you might need to take while abroad so that you will still graduate from your home university on time.

In addition, be sure to check in with the study abroad office on your home campus. These professionals will provide valuable information about your home institution's study abroad policies, including approved programs, paperwork requirements, credit transfer, financial aid transfer and more.

Remember our deadlines
All of our programs operate on a rolling admission basis, which means that programs may close before the published deadline. To find out the application deadline for a university, visit the university's page on this Web site, or visit Application Deadlines page.

Apply to our programs
You can apply online, download an application, or request an application by calling our office at 800-858-0229.

Once we receive your application, a program advisor will look it over to make sure that the university you've chosen can meet your academic needs. If he or she thinks that another school might be a better fit for you, the advisor will call you to discuss your options.

See our application requirements page for more information about IFSA-Butler admissions guidelines and required paperwork.

Complete your application
In addition to our online and paper applications, we require additional materials from each student. Our applications and program catalogs detail the materials that students must submit with an application. These additional materials include:

  • Program approval form
  • Recommendation form. Some programs require two recommendations.
  • An official transcript for all college and university work you have completed to date.
  • One 2"x2" color photograph.

Depending on the host university you choose and the courses you want to take, you might have to submit additional materials, such as an art portfolio, music tape or writing sample. Internship candidates must complete an additional internship application.

Send all application materials to:

Housing and course forms
When we first receive your application, we'll send you a welcome packet with information about housing, course selection for your first-choice university and financial aid. You'll need to complete and return all required forms to us within 10 days so that we can arrange your housing and inform your host university of the courses you want to take. This packet also includes Preparing to Study Abroad, a booklet of information on living abroad, banking, travel, packing, academics and other predeparture topics.

Submitting your application abroad
Once your application is in order, a program advisor will submit your application to your first-choice university. In many cases, students must choose courses from the host university's course catalog before their application can be sent abroad for an admissions decision.

Await your acceptance
Because our programs are fully integrated, we must send your application to the host university for an admissions decision. Except for a few universities, IFSA-Butler cannot make acceptance decisions for English-speaking programs.

Depending on the host university, an acceptance decision can take anywhere from one to eight weeks. Some universities in Ireland and England have an especially long wait for acceptance decisions.

We can make acceptance decisions for most of our Latin American programs; the acceptance process usually takes about two weeks from the time we have your completed application.

We reserve the right to reject applicants on the basis of academic, disciplinary, conduct and other considerations.

Accept your place on our program
Once a host university accepts you, IFSA-Butler will send you an acceptance packet. This packet includes an official letter of acceptance from IFSA-Butler, a medical form, a country-specific program fee sheet and a program contract that you must sign and return within ten days, along with your $500 non-refundable deposit. (If you attend a direct-billing university in the U.S., you do not need to pay the $500. A list of direct-billing schools is available in Money Matters, which we send to you after we receive your application.)

If your first-choice university does not accept you, a program advisor will call you to let you know. At that time you can choose to apply to another university or defer your application to a later semester.
