The Heredia Intermediate program is designed to not only help students improve their Spanish skills, but to also provide a unique opportunity for students to become personally involved in their host culture through volunteer work. A service learning component is integrated into the mandatory Intermediate Spanish course, which carries a total of 6 U.S. semester credit hours.

After an informational workshop, students will select from a variety of community organizations in the Heredia/San José area with which they will volunteer for the semester. Students will work at least two hours per week with organizations such as:

  • Inbioparque (Instituto de Biodiversidad)-Environmental conservation and protection
  • Programa Bandera Azul-Community and beach beautification projects
  • Nursing homes for the elderly
  • Orphanages
  • Tutoring school-aged children

A complete list of opportunities and organizations will be distributed during orientation. Please contact your program advisor for more details.
