Academics

Academic Structure

What is the On Irish Tides: Marine Science in Cork and Galway program?
This program is an innovative multidisciplinary approach to topics related to marine science. Participants will divide their time between University College Cork and National University of Ireland, Galway.

What will my academic schedule be like?
Your academic schedule will consist of a set curriculum of courses, lectures and research activities. The program begins in Cork and then moves to Galway for the second half of the summer session. Field excursions, research outings and cultural events are also part of the program.

Will I have classes with local students?
Although IFSA-Butler is committed to providing integrated programs, summer courses abroad are often geared toward study abroad students only. Please be aware that your contact with local students may be limited, as you will likely attend classes and live with U.S. and other international students. All courses are taught by UCC and NUI Galway faculty.

Courses

What courses will I take?
Students follow a set curriculum of classes and research activities in both locations:

EV3011 The Marine Environment and its Sustainable Use (Cork)
Cork is the site of one of the largest natural harbors in the world and the site of novel research in marine resources and renewable energy. This course offers the opportunity to study the rich marine environment of the region in the context of understanding the nature of marine resources, how these are affected and the ways in which these can be sustainably used.

Students will gain experience of maritime practice in a state-of-the-art ship and ocean simulators, and in Personal Survival Techniques (PST) in the environmental pool.

Students will gain a practical knowledge of multidisciplinary marine data collection and learn how marine resources are used locally. Fieldtrips will explore the natural history, marine and cultural heritage of the region. This will include visits to mussel and fish farms on the south coast, to historical Irish coastal towns and villages, and mapping the nearby wreckage site of the Lusitania.

SU416 Galway Bay's Atlantic Margin: Marine, Earth Science and Cultural Perspectives (Galway)
This course is a comprehensive geoscientific, marine, cultural and historical study of Galway Bay. The Galway Bay course offers students the opportunity to study the geological and oceanographic processes that have shaped the natural landscape. The rich maritime and cultural heritage of this region will be explored through its archaeology, history, literature, poetry and music associations.

Onshore and island fieldtrips will explore the natural history and archaeology of the region, including a visit to the unique Cliffs of Moher and the Connemara and Burren landscapes. Literature, poetry and music traditions of the region will be celebrated and explored using key locations in the Bay area for lectures and cultural fieldtrips.

Transcripts

How will my home university know what my classes were and what grades I received?
After you have returned to the U.S., your home university will receive a Butler University transcript with the credit you earned for this program.
