Founded in 1845, University College Cork is one of the oldest universities in Ireland and offers the best of traditional scholarship and cutting-edge technology in a beautiful, friendly city. Academic Structure

What is the summer program at UCC?
The UCC summer program is designed for visiting international students and seeks to introduce students to aspects of Irish culture, history and society. The program revolves around a theme that changes each year, but which is always related to Irish history and literature.

What will my academic schedule be like?
Your academic schedule will consist of morning lectures, afternoon seminars (discussion groups) anda series of field trips to places connected with the figures examined. Attendance at lectures, seminars and field trips is recorded and taken into consideration when configuring your grade.

How much work will be required of me?
The summer program at UCC is intense and rigorous. You will spend much of your time reading, researching and writing essays centered on the current program theme. UCC will send you a study pack prior to the start of the summer program. The pack will contain core texts and secondary reading material, and professors will expect you to have read much of that material by the time you arrive for the summer school. There will be four written essays (two in history and two in literature) and two written exams (one in history and one in literature).

Will I have classes with local students?
Although IFSA-Butler is committed to providing integrated programs, summer courses abroad are often geared toward study abroad students only. Please be aware that your contact with local students may be limited, as you will likely attend classes and live with U.S. and other international students. All courses are taught by UCC faculty.

Courses

What courses will I take?
The theme for the 2013 summer school is "Through the Waves and the Winds." For the two weeks devoted to the study of Irish history, the school will explore Irish identity formation and expression in its historical context from the earliest descriptions of Ireland and its inhabitants to modern contestations of that identity. 

During the two weeks devoted to literature, the school will examine how 20th century writers sought to define a sense of cultural identity by exploring the idealized version of Ireland's past. Students will read the poetry of W.B. Yeats and the fiction of Elizabeth Bowen. For more information, click here.

Credits

How many credits will I receive?
IFSA-Butler requires that all participants undertake a full summer course load. Students will receive a maximum of 5 U.S. semester credit hours (2.5 U.S. semester credits in Irish literature and 2.5 U.S. semester credits in Irish history) for completion of the UCC summer program. All courses are graded on an A–F scale, and there is no provision for pass/fail or audit. Students must take their courses for credit.

May I take less than 5 U.S. semester credit hours?
You may opt to take less than 5 U.S. semester credit hours, but you may take no fewer than 4 U.S. semester credit hours while at UCC. Please keep in mind that there is no fee differential for taking fewer than 5 U.S. semester credit hours.

How do I opt to take less than 5 U.S. semester credit hours?
When you arrive at UCC, you will register for your course. We strongly recommended that you register for 5 U.S semester credit hours, but may register for the minimum of 4 U.S. (two in history and two in literature) semester credit hours.

Registration

What are the registration conditions?
You must take a full course load as determined by IFSA-Butler. Credit will be awarded on a Butler University transcript based on a typical U.S. full course load. All courses are graded on an A–F scale, and there is no provision for pass/fail or auditing courses unless pass/fail is the only method of assessment for the course. You are not allowed to register for online, distance education or hybrid courses.

You should also be aware that you may be charged additional fees by your home institution or host university to take or process additional credits. Taking less than a full course load may jeopardize your student status and result in personal academic repercussions and/or loss of financial aid.

There will be two written exams, one in history and one in literature.

Transcripts

How will my home university know what my classes were and what grades I received?
After you have returned to the U.S., your home university will receive a Butler University transcript with the credit you earned at University College Cork. The Butler University transcript will report the equivalent U.S. semester credit hours and letter grades. We also will send an official transcript to your permanent address.

Housing Options

What is the housing like at University College Cork?
Summer school students at UCC live in modern, furnished student residences that are a short walk from campus. The residence hall consists of up to four study-bedroom apartments with fully furnished kitchens and a common room where students can watch television, study or get together. There is a sink is in each room and a pillow, comforter, sheets and towels are also provided. A self-service laundry room is available six days a week.

Meals

Are there meal plans at University College Cork?
No. All accommodation is self-catering. You will have access to kitchen facilities and supplies ( pots, pans, plates, cutlery, etc.) to prepare your own meals. If you tire of cooking, you will be able to find meals in restaurants and cafes on and near campus.

Housing FAQs

Is my housing included in the program fee?
Yes. Your program fee includes accommodation at the university while classes are in session. You are responsible for the cost of your meals and any commuting costs you may incur

When will I receive my housing assignment?
While you will be in UCC housing, you will not find out your official address until you arrive overseas for your Ireland orientation.

Please keep in mind that while IFSA-Butler guarantees housing, we cannot guarantee your preferences.

Do I have to pay a housing deposit?
No. Summer students are not required to pay a housing deposit.

Can I arrange my own housing?
Yes. IFSA-Butler recognizes that some students require independent housing for their time abroad. If you choose not to take advantage of our guaranteed housing, you may sign up for independent housing on the housing preference form. Once you’ve made this choice, we will not provide housing for you or bill you for the accommodation fee.

Please be advised that housing costs can be high abroad, and many times students living independently end up spending more money than students living in IFSA-Butler arranged housing. If you are hoping to save money by arranging housing on your own, please research your options early so you can compare costs. You must notify us of your intention to live in independent housing May 1 for summer programs. We are not able to accommodate independent housing requests after these dates.

Your program end date may change due to circumstances beyond IFSA-Butler's control. Upon arrival at your host university, be sure to verify your exam schedule and program end date. We also strongly recommend that you investigate fees and penalties associated with your airline tickets in case you need to make date or route changes.

Program housing is available only until the day shown on the calendar as “Program ends.”

Exams must be taken where and when scheduled. Under no circumstances may students request that an exam time be changed.

Program Fee Bills
IFSA-Butler will send a single bill for the entire program fee, which includes tuition, services and housing. Students who opt for independent housing will not be charged the housing component of the program fee.

Housing
The housing component of our program fee is based on the average cost of local student self-catering accommodation, usually a shared room in a regular dormitory, apartment or house without any extra features.

† Housing Deposit
Semester and year students are required to pay a housing deposit of $300. This payment is in addition to the program fee but is due on the same date. The deposit is held separately from the program fee and should be paid separately. The deposit is refunded to the student after the program, less any damages, fines or outstanding debts in the student’s name. Students in summer programs do not pay the $300 housing deposit.

We recommend taking into account your current spending habits, the cost of living in your host country and the current exchange rate. Your IFSA-Butler program advisor can be helpful as you attempt to work on a personal budget for your experience abroad.

Personal Miscellaneous: Covers general expenses of college life, including course supplies, photocopying, toiletries, snacks, personal care, etc.

We must receive this form before we can send your application to University College Cork for an admissions decision. They can be sent to IFSA-Butler via email, fax or regular mail. Please submit this form with the remainder of your program application.
