What the International Summer School at the University of Edinburgh has to offer
• Creative writing in one of Britain's most historic and culturally rich cities
• Text and Context, a study of literature with an emphasis on modernism, Scottish and contemporary works
• An opportunity to meet distinguished British writers, poets and literary critics
• A flexible schedule with three term options
• Students who choose to attend all three terms have the opportunity to attend three world-famous events: the Fringe Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival and the International Book Festival

Housing
• Students live in Pollock Halls, a 15-minute walk from classes
• Pollock amenities include a computer lab, cafeteria, restaurant, shops and bars. Internet access is available upon request.
• En-suite accommodation available
• Housing is within walking distance of the city center
• Program fee includes some meals

Academics
• Hone your creative skills with the creative writing option
• Creative writing encompasses a wide range of literary genres, including fiction, poetry, drama, screenwriting, crime fiction, science fiction and life-writing
• Meet distinguished British writers, poets and literary critics as part of the curriculum
• Text and Context focuses on three aspects of British literature: Modernism (Term 1), Scottish Literature (Term 2) and Contemporary Literature (Term 3)
• Modernisn focuses on British and Irish modernism; Scottish Literature focuses on literature from 1900 to present; Contemporary Literature showcases works from British and Irish authors.
• Students who choose the Term 1 and Creative Writing options will earn 5.5 U.S. semester credit hours
• Students who choose Terms 1, 2 and 3 will earn 7.5 U.S. semester credit hours

Application requirements
• Two letters of recommendation are required
• Creative Writing applications must submit a short sample of prose (50 lines maximum) or drama piece (3000 words maximum)
• For Creative Writing applicants, one recommendation must be written by a university instructor familiar with the student's creative writing abilities
• Students must submit a brief statement about their interest in the literature summer program and their background in the aspect(s) of literature they intend to study
• Creative Writing applicants must also submit a brief one-page personal statement explaining why they wish to study at the University of Edinburgh and why they believe they are a good candidate for the Creative Writing program

Term options
• Term 1 plus Creative Writing and study week *
• Term 1 plus Creative Writing and travel week **
• Terms 1, 2 and 3 (no Creative Writing option available)

* IFSA-Butler provides housing during the study week.
** Students choosing the travel week option must vacate their housing during the travel week.
