Volunteer opportunities are available in conjunction with our program at the Universidad de Costa Rica in San José, Costa Rica. The university's volunteerism office, along with IFSA-Butler program staff, is available to assist with volunteer placements, offering more than 300 opportunities in a variety of fields. While some may be available during term time, others are full-time, week-long opportunities. Please be aware that you may have to pay a fee to participate in some UCR-sponsored volunteer projects.

Opportunities include working with grade schools and middle schools, acting as teachers' aides and tutors; senior citizens centers, reading to the elderly; orphanages and foster homes, playing and reading to the children; and national parks and reserves, assisting in patrolling, research and education outreach. A complete list of opportunities is distributed during orientation.

Students who successfully complete a set amount of volunteer experience in Costa Rica will receive an IFSA-Butler certificate of completion at the end of the semester.
