Volunteer opportunities are available in conjunction with our program at Universidad Nacional in Heredia, Costa Rica. In the past, students have worked with: Esperanza Joven, providing support to rural communities in areas of education, infrastructure maintenance (painting schools or community centers) or natural disaster relief; environmental awareness agencies; and Fundación de Don Bosco y Sor María Romero, supporting high-risk children and teenagers with academic assistance and athletic programs.  Other opportunities may include:

• Environmental projects with Proyecto Hormiga
• Support for women with cancer at Fundación Contra el Cáncer de Mama (FUNDESCO)
• Many organizations that help women, children in need and senior citizens
• Environmental organizations such as VIDA and Inbiopark
• Education and medical help for Indigenous Nations

A complete list of opportunities is distributed during orientation.

Students who successfully complete a set amount of volunteer experience in Costa Rica will receive an IFSA-Butler certificate of completion at the end of the semester. For more information about volunteering during your semester or year at the Universidad Nacional, contact your IFSA-Butler program advisor.
