DePauw University’s Latoshia Everson addresses the “invisible influence” of attachment parenting in student financial aid and program advising. In examples which pan the spectrum of student backgrounds, Ms. Everson’s personal experiences with parent involvement deploy an empathy-based approach to learning and understanding each family, and empowering students to engage their parents in productive ways. A self-proclaimed “hype person,” practitioners will appreciate her enthusiastic call for a healthy student-parent-advisor dynamic.

If we understand more about the motivations which influence why students choose certain destinations, can that inform how we develop, recruit, advise, and deliver those programs? Dr. Jill Reister talks through her dissertation research and personal doctoral story to identify key characteristics, academic and pre-professional interests, and future focus of students choosing nontraditional study abroad locations.

Indianapolis Public School Principal Andrea Hunley discusses individualized learning as a tool for equity in this thoughtful EdTalk. “Meritocracy is a myth,” she poses, and the systems within which we educators and our students move was not built to provide opportunity for all. In order to move beyond reliance on standalone advocates, we must dismantle our opportunity paradigm to create space for unique experiences, objectives, and abilities. By interrogating certain assumptions and intentionally seeking the missing perspectives, we can begin to make individualization—and equity—systematic.

Mentoring has the power to engage students in purposeful tasks, integrate and apply learning, and foster frequent feedback characteristic of high-impact educational practices (HIP). But how might mentorship differ for those who think they need guidance the least? IFSA Resident Director Andrew Williams shares his strategies to mentor high-performing, high-achieving students within the University of Oxford programs. Assumptions and expectations have the power to derail student experiences, as many face questions for the first time of self-worth, academic courage, and what they are truly there to discover. From curating relevant feedback, to “system hacks,” to unpacking expectations, high-achieving students may benefit more than they realize from the guided challenge and support of a trusted mentor. 

A Day in the Life of a Faculty Leader Abroad (Video)
Dr. David Wick, Middlebury Institute of International Studies
As a former study abroad practitioner and current faculty, Dr. David Wick has seen program administration and pedagogy from multiple perspectives. Through the very practical logistics of proposing curriculum, creating and managing budgets, recruiting students, and preparing participants for the experience, program instruction itself may occupy the smallest part of the faculty’s work. So how can the learning be augmented and individualized in ways that reach beyond that short instructional time abroad? This Ed Talk explores—through the realistic lens of a busy faculty member—strategies to embed reflection and self-authorship, not only while abroad, but in the processes and preparations which surround the experience.

The 2019 Conference was a great time to meet up with some old friends and make some new ones. Our time together also included the IFSA Meet & Treat, lively sessions, and the (pre) historic reception and dinner at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
