Pre-Departure: Excitement and Trepedation
“I have crossed the seas, I have left cities behind me,
and I have followed the source of rivers towards their
source or plunged into forests, always making for other
cities. I have had women, I have fought with men ; and
I could never turn back any more than a record can spin
in reverse. And all that was leading me where ?
To this very moment…” –Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea
The trepidation of leaving something so comfortable and familiar for something totally unknown is hard to express in words. My mood is such a perfect combination of fear and excitement. I have found that the best way to prepare for such new adventures is too stay busy and try to become as informed as possible. I will be going to Mansfield College, Oxford University, so I have found myself spending a lot of time on the college website.
How I feel now is quite different from how I felt when I was leaving for college, mainly because I know my destination (Oxford) will be culturally and socially very different from what I am used to. Before, I traveled simply from one town in the rural south to another, and the transition wasn’t that difficult. But here’s to new beginnings.
