Pre-Departure

Hello, everyone!

Welcome to my first blog post! My name is Katrina O’Donnell and I am a Biology student at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. I have always had an interest in study abroad and my school helped me decide how and when to fulfill that interest. After months of decision making, I decided to attend the University of Limerick (UL) in Limerick, Ireland for the upcoming fall semester, which happens to be the start of my junior year at school. I chose UL for different reasons, one of these reasons being that they offer many science and engineering courses that sounded very interesting and that will help keep me on track at school. Another reason is that I have always wanted to venture to Ireland, partly because I am a quarter Irish and partly because I have seen many beautiful photographs of its beautiful castles and green hills.

Anyway, as you can tell by my post title, I have not left for my trip yet. I am three days away from driving to the airport from my home in Audubon, New Jersey. This also happens to be the last day I will see my home because my family will be moving to a new house while I’m away. I am currently feeling both excited and sad. I am sad about leaving my childhood home, but at the same time I am excited to start a new adventure that I know will change my life for the better.

While my parents have been preparing our house for the big move, I have been preparing for my abroad experience by shopping for what I need and researching. My favorite purchase is a book about living in Ireland that has a lot of great tips and information. It even includes Irish phrases that will help me when I’m communicating abroad. I have all my other abroad purchases, such as my travel pillow carry on items, in my closet ready to be packed away. Over the next views days, I will be sorting through my clothes deciding what to bring and what not to bring. I am planning on sticking to a limited wardrobe that can fit in one suitcase (my airline only allows for 1 free checked bag, a second bag costs an additional $100). Anything else I absolutely need will be added to my luggage, but, for the most part, I plan to buy a lot of things when I get there so that I save money and space.

I am very eager to start my abroad experience. My friend from high school also happens to be going to UL in the fall so I am very excited to explore Ireland with her and other friends I meet when I get there. When I write my next post I’ll be in Ireland, which is totally crazy! I am really looking forward to sharing more of my experiences!

Until next time,

Katrina
