Next Stop: London
My bags are packed. Getting them to zip, however, will be a different story. For my 3 month study abroad adventure in London, I didn’t know what I needed and what I didn’t need. So, of course, I just decided to pack everything. One of the original newsletters sent out to us study abroad students said to pick out everything you want to pack, and then take only half of it. I’m not sure I took that advice too well.
Just like my over-stuffed bags, I’m sure that when I return home from London in 3 months, I won’t be able to zip up my mouth. I know I will have long stories to tell my friends and family about getting to explore a new city, meet new friends and explore Europe. Until I arrive, my memory space for London is empty, just like my suitcases were empty two days ago. The thing about empty spaces though, is that as scary as they are, you can fill them up in just a few minutes. That’s what I’m expecting as soon as I land in London in 2 days.
I know I will be overwhelmed with the sights and sounds of a new culture. Suddenly, I will hear people with British accents, see the word “color” spelled like “colour” and eat fish and chips. Or maybe I won’t eat fish and chips. Nevertheless, I know that so many fun and exciting memories await me.
I’m excited to see Kate Middleton’s wedding dress on display in Buckingham Palace, see Big Ben and ride on the London Eye. Classes start in a few weeks at UCL and I am also excited about getting to be in class with British students and experience another classroom culture. I can’t wait to pick my classes during orientation next week! I am a Politics major so I am in the European Social and Political Studies department. I anticipate getting to study about European governments. I think it should be interesting, especially given the challenges that Europe is currently facing.
Well, I am off to try to zip up my suitcases now. My next entry will be from London. I can’t wait to post videos and pictures of my adventures abroad. I would have posted a video with this entry, but I figured nobody really wanted to watch me struggle to zip up a suitcase!
