Where castles are commonplace

Get to know a proud, rugged UK country with a language all its own.

People have dwelled in Wales for some 29,000 years, and with legends and castles galore, no wonder it’s a historian’s dream. History aside, England’s westward neighbor also has plenty to explore, including 1,680 miles of stunning coastline and hardscrabble peaks.

As a student at Cardiff University — one of the UK’s top 20 — you’ll get to know the capital city through challenging classes alongside peers from the UK (and 148 more countries). Plus, discover how Wales fits into the larger UK picture, with excursions to London and other prominent locations, like Bath, Brighton, and Dover.

Did You Know?

  • Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is not just an 18-syllable tongue twister — it’s the name of a small town in Wales.
  • Hillary Clinton has Welsh roots. Her great-grandfather hailed from Llangynidr and worked as a miner before moving to the U.S. in 1879.
  • Roald Dahl — author of the BFG, James and the Giant Peach, and many more children’s favorites — grew up in Cardiff. (Look for the honorary blue plaques.)
  • A champion of Welsh language, Cardiff University has more than 1,000 students who study in Welsh.
