A Letter from IFSA President and CEO Regarding Program Updates

October 16, 2018 8:10 pm

Dear valued IFSA partner,

IFSA has a long history of delivering high-quality educational and cultural experiences for U.S. undergraduates abroad. We are proud of the individualized care and support students receive throughout their journey with us, through a mentorship-based approach to individualized learning, personalized attention to matters of health and safety, and periodic academic check-ins during the semester. Our entire team cares deeply about your students and the quality of their experience.

Our goal is to focus our efforts on delivering the individualized IFSA experience for your students through programming that aligns with our key commitments of inclusive excellence, individualized learning, intercultural agility, and enduring impact. In order to focus our efforts on fulfilling this goal, we have made the difficult decision to bring a few institutional relationships abroad to a close.

This decision allows us to strengthen our reach geographically and academically to deliver the kind of educational experience we value in new places and ways. Our Global Flagship sites are one embodiment of IFSA’s evolving identity, and we look forward to the programming and assistance we can deliver to our students and close partners in these locations. We also recently announced new programs in RomeBarcelona, and Tel Aviv. All three locations adhere to future-focused design principles and are attracting early interest from students.

The institutions listed below offer exceptionally strong academic programming, and we regret that student enrollment through IFSA has not reflected that strength in recent years. The following programs will be offered with IFSA through spring 2019; however, we will no longer offer them beginning in fall 2019:

•          Australian National University
•          University of Western Australia
•          Murdoch University, Australia
•          Flinders University, Australia
•          Massey University, New Zealand
•          Rehearsing Change, Ecuador
•          University of East Anglia, England
•          Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, England
•          Maynooth University, Ireland

At several of our sites, we are re-focusing on programs where we can provide greater impact. The following campus locations will close after the spring 2019 semester:

•          Nathan campus only, Griffith University, Australia
•          Gatton campus only, University of Queensland, Australia

We will no longer offer two summer programs, beginning in summer 2019:

•          Ulster Nursing and Pre-Health, Ireland
•          Intermediate Language and Culture in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Finally, we will merge the Engage programs into our existing offerings in England, Spain, and Australia. We are committed to affordable programs with professional development and fieldwork opportunities, and we are confident that our current offerings and new development in these countries will allow us to serve the students who have been enrolling in the Engage programs.

If you have any questions regarding these changes or would like to discuss programs that might be a good fit for specific students at your institution, please do not hesitate to reach out to your IFSA Field Director.

Thank you for the opportunity to work with you and your students. We are grateful for your partnership.

Kind regards,

Heather Barclay Hamir, Ph.D.
