Social Media Marketing in the Age of Self  
(3 U.S. semester credit hours)   

This course will outfit you with the tools and expertise to develop strategic and comprehensive social media marketing plans that integrate with overall marketing and communications efforts to achieve business goals. Through case studies and hands-on exercises, you will develop a deep understanding of social media platforms and best practices, leveraging these channels to elevate one’s reach and reputation. Topics include choosing appropriate platforms, creating effective and engaging social media content, and developing social media policies and content management strategies. The class emphasizes social listening, ethics, and diversity. 

Experiential Learning
To make the most of your three weeks in Barcelona, IFSA takes your learning outside the classroom with multiple co-curricular activities each week – designed to introduce you to the role that social media marketing plays in Barcelona’s international profile and how these same strategies can be applied in both personal and professional contexts. These experiences may include:
  • A visit to Sagrada Família and Park Güell.
  • A workshop on Design Thinking methodologies for business and communications.
  • A meeting with Barcelona start-ups and non-profits to discuss social media strategies and campaigns.
  • A local cooking class and social media marketing recipe competition.
  • A guest lecture from a television critic on the role of social media in today’s television industry.
All activities, including meals and transportation, are included in the program fee. 
IFSA courses are taught by English-speaking faculty from various higher education and professional institutions throughout Barcelona, who combine theoretical and practical expertise in their chosen subject area.
After you return to the U.S., IFSA will send an official Butler University transcript to your home university with your coursework converted to the U.S. credit system. You will also have access to an unofficial transcript in your IFSA Student Portal. The transcript reflects courses taken, credits attempted, and grades earned during your term abroad. This service is included in your study abroad program at no additional cost

Housing & Meals

Housing Type
You will live in centrally located, fully furnished apartments in Barcelona with single and shared bedroom options, and shared bathrooms. Apartments include a common dining area and kitchen with a microwave, refrigerator, and stovetop. There is no meal plan; you will purchase your meals or cook for yourself.
